One of the things that I do with clients is to metaphorically help them (gently) empty out their cupboards and have a good look at what is there! We talk a lot about their past and the memories and experiences that they have locked away, often out of consciousness. Many lost memories appear - which is why the work needs to be done gently.
I see the whole process of counselling is about working with what clients find in their 'cupboards' and then putting it all back in a much more satisfying way. The client is much more conscious of what is hidden away in their cupboards - including the habits they have developed that may once, (as children) have been essential but now need to change.
